Be Awakened...

There is no point in distracting yourself

There is no point in lying to yourself or the people around you

You have valid feelings and thoughts.

Look to them and let them flow free.

Be awakened to yourself.

....I feel awakened.

Solange Shares Her Style & Music With Refinery 29

One of my fave artists, Solange Knowles, recently did a photoshoot and interview with Refinery 29 to discuss her personal style, her inspirations and her upcoming album. It's clear that this girl is quite the abstract, rebellious hippie as she talks about her rocker style recording process (replete with doobies) and her connection, or rather lack there of, to her family's clothing line, House of Dereon. I'm liking this chick's style. Werk it, betch.

Who are your style heroes?
"My mom in the '70s and '80s! She was a bad bitch. Sex and the City totally jacked her steez on the camels. I have a pic of her on a camel ride in Egypt in the '80s serving the hell out of that desert! Also, Diana Ross, The Fela Kuti Queens, Björk, '70s-era Chaka Khan, Chloë Sevigny, '90s Erykah Badu."

You've got such unique style, would you ever consider being involved in the family fashion business, House of Deréon?
"Why thank you very much! It's funny you ask because I initially was involved as the spokesperson, but the clothes just didn't reflect my personal style and I decided to hand that over. That's the great thing about my family. We work together so closely that if something's not working out, we can be honest about it and there won't be any grudges or issues. I wrote a couple of songs on my sister's last album and if there's a line she doesn't like, she changes it and we keep on moving. I will say though, they did just do a bedding line that I am extremely in love with and I was like, 'Can I model that... in my house?'"

If your style were a song, what song would it be?
"For sure Q-Tip's 'Vivrant Thang'."

What inspired the bold new 'do? You mentioned you can no longer hide with that hair, has it changed the way you see yourself?
"When I was recording, I was staying in a house with five guys and two showers. I knew there would be a shower wait everyday and with my natural cropped hair, it's mandatory that I wash it otherwise it gets stuck to my head like glue! I wanted to get something that I could literally roll out of bed without looking nuts. I watched so many Chaka Khan YouTube videos and became sort of obsessed with her during the process. I went to my stylist and said 'Give me the fro.' I walk differently now, sing differently; This hair has spirit and soul."

Tell us a little bit about working on the new album.
"I went up to Santa Barbara, found this house on five acres in the mountains and invited a bunch of amazing musicians to come live there with me for a month and just experiment. We woke up around 10 a.m. and made music until midnight, all of course while drinking good wine, picking avocados from the trees outside to make guacamole, and maybe enjoying a joint or two. I left the process a little crazy, but I really feel like I came into my own."

You're friends with lots of Brooklyn bands—Grizzly Bear, Dirty Projectors—how do you see those bands inspiring R&B and Hip Hop?
"Well, to be honest, I think we inspire each other. Want to know who re-introduced me to "My Boo"? Edward Droste [of Grizzly Bear]. Who played TLC's "Creep" when I totally forgot what a jammer it was? Caroline Polachek [of Chairlift]. MGMT played Bone Thugs in Harmony's "Creepin On Ah Come Up" backstage after one of their shows and I had total junior high flashbacks. I think so many hip-hop artists are now jumping on this weird electro bandwagon thinking it will broaden their audience instead of doing what made them them in the first place. There's definitely a group of folks in hip-hop like Kanye, Q-Tip, and ?uestlove who know how to appreciate an album like Bitte Orca and see the beauty in it. As for R&B, I'm so bored with it. After being an R&B junkie for years, I actually turned to a lot of indie music because I was just so uninterested. I grew up loving Missy Elliott, Destiny's Child, SWV, Aaliyah, Carl Thomas, Melody... nowadays that substance and style are kind of dead with the exception of a few."

David Agbodji Returns For Calvin Klein's FW 2010 Campaign

It seems as though stern-faced beauty, David Agbodji, has Calvin Klein wrapped around his fashionable finger as he once again nabs a campaign with the fashion house for their Fall/Winter men's collection. Also returning to shoot the campaign is photographer Steven Klein who indulges in a muted stone theme as Agbodji poses upon discs of rock in glossy evening suits. It all makes for a stunning campaign and a another blue chip notch on David's belt.

Sex & The City - A Goodbye To Remember

Gone Till...October

In my life I rarely come across people who embrace me for everything that I am including all of my weirdness/craziness. So when they do come around I cherish them with all that I've got and hold on to them as tightly as I can. Today, one of those friends moved back to LA and it really is tearing me up inside. He is one of my kindreds and for that I love him dearly. I'm missing him already and I can't wait till he returns. Until then...I guess he'll be gone till November.

Pink - I Don't Believe You (Video)

I don't mind it, I still don't mind at all
It's like one of those bad dreams when you can't wake up
Looks like you've given up, you've had enough
But I want more, no I won't stop
'Cause I just know you'll come around....right?

I had no idea that this video existed. I just thought it would be one of those occasions where my favorite song (on an album) doesn't get a video. But apparently I was wrong. Beautifully directed by the talented Sophie Muller (Sade's go to video director), "I Don't Believe You" presents the darkened (black & white) world of P!nk's life after the near break up of her marriage to Carey Hart. Adding sentiment to the videos storyline, P!nk wears her actual wedding gown as she travels through The Los Angeles Theater, in search of her husband and the life she wanted them to have together.

As P!nk explained on her website, "I Don't Believe You" is her favorite song from Funhouse,

"Because it's just so naked. It's like taking a deep breathe and saying, 'Here I am. Take me. Take your best shot'. The first thing that comes to my mind with I Don't Believe You is me standing in the vocal booth listening... Actually in the control room listening to this song, tears running down my face, just like 'fuck, really?' It's the vulnerable weak side of me that I don't let out very often. And it's [sighs], yeah it's that song. And I love it, I love it. I just love it, it's very near and dear to me." -- P!nk

Joan Smalls - The New Gucci Girl

Joan Smalls' star just keeps rising and rising as she nabs yet another high-profile gig as one of the faces of Gucci's 2010 Pre-Fall campaign. Shot by Mert & Marcus Joan smolders alongside top model, Raquel Zimmerman, as they lay seductively across the hood of a sleek silver car. Kudos to Joan. Werq betch!

Kele Okereke - Tenderoni

Last week I had no idea who the hell Kele Okereke was but after reading about him on ohnotheydidnt (my guilty pleasure) I'm super intrigued by this guy. Hailing from Liverpool, England, Kele is the lead singer of indie-electro band, Bloc Party, who've released three albums here in the states and across the pond. Now Kele is set to release his own solo album, The Boxer, on June 21. Along with revealing new music, Okereke has also recently come out as an openly gay artist, even appearing on this month's issue of Attitude magazine. I really want to know more about this man and his music, especially after watching his video for his new single, "Tenderoni."

LastO + ADTV = A Sexy Literacy Campaign

My fave rapper and friend, LastO, has paired up with ADTV for their steamy new photo campaign, "Books Are Sexy," which will promote the Derrick L. Briggs book club. From the looks of this behind the scenes video the images are going to be extra hot...and full of oiled and glittered man boobies. YAES!!! I personally can't wait for the final project and I'll definitely be posting them when they're released.

Kelis - 4th of July (Video)

I'm not even the biggest fan of this song ( I think it's alright) but this chic is FAB and I admit that I love the message of the chorus. Something's will never be more important than simply loving another person. Go off, Kelis!

Mortal Kombat Rebirth

Director, Kevin Tancharoen, with the help of screen-writer, Oren Uziel, has released this 8 minute short film showcasing a revamped storyline for the famous Mortal Kombat franchise. Tancharoen has stripped the franchise of it's fantasy based roots and given the characters a more reality based/sci-fi make-over, focusing the storyline around Agents Jackson Briggs and Sonja Blade as they work to infiltrate the Mortal Kombat tournament and hunt down a cadre of violent murderers who've turned their city of Deacon upside down. The fight scenes, done by Larnell Stovall, are amazing and the short itself is a down-right intriguing concept (despite a pretty gross scene involving a refrigerator and a detached body part). I'm hoping this actually gets turned into a full-length movie.

Trans Model Lea T. in Italian Vanity Fair

The fashion world has been abuzz ever since Givenchy previewed it's upcoming fall campaign with transsexual model, Lea T. Now this stunning and alluring beauty is sharing her life's story from her childhood in Italy, her time in art school, and of course her groundbreaking experience with Givenchy in this month's Italian Vanity Fair. I wish the interview was in English because I would love to know more about this woman. I find her to be all kinds of beautiful and I admire Riccardo Tisci for using her in his campaign.

The Lady, Gaga & The King, Larry

My favorite segments from Lady GaGa's Larry King Live Interview as she speaks about her mother's womb, her confusion about religion, her love for the gays and her disdain for "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."
